My family’s tradition for the last several years is that only home made gifts are to be exchanged. My son loves it. And he loves helping me come up with what we are going to give and also making the gifts. The gifts have become more elaborate as he gets older, so we turn out some pretty great gifts now. (He’s 16 )
He really never has been all that influenced by TV though. So I guess I’m lucky.

No, but I wish I had. They are now 10 and 13, and they make their wish list from watching commercials. A friend of mine once thought of making a rule that if it has a tv advertisements, it’s not a holiday present. Start early, I guess, so their expectations are different (hey, you look a lot like me, but not so angry).

What was it? Did your child(ren) accept it graciously? Did TV advertising affect his/her (their) response?
